What Fencing Contractors Do – The Role of a Fencing Contractor.

Fences offer security and privacy, help to reduce noise and wind, define boundaries and keep pets and children in. Fencing contractors can ensure a structurally sound fence is constructed. You should obtain several written quotes for the work you would like done. Determine whether they will supply the materials or if you will purchase them and they will only provide an installation service. Some contractors may offer a warranty on their work.

Usually a fencing contractor will quote on a per metre basis. This figure charged is dependent upon the types of material used and complexity of the job.

There are many types of fencing available and so you should give some thought to the purpose it will serve and what best suits your needs. Consider the extent of the privacy you would like, what views will be blocked, how aesthetically pleasing it will be, what materials suit the style of your home, whether you want it to block noise and whether it will block light.

You must also consider your local council regulations for fence heights, materials and locations. If you have a pool, installation of fences should comply with the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act 1987 and the Building Act 2004.

Fence Types

  • Timber Fences

Timber is affordable and durable. It can be treated, painted, stained or natural and styles include picket, louvre, panel and lapped paling. It can be treated in order to make it resistant to rot, insects, termites and weather.

  • Metal Fences

Metal fences are often made from steel or aluminium; which is a lightweight and strong material. Popular metal fence options include sheet panel, pickets and tubular.
Colorbond fencing can be erected with post and rails; the cheapest option, or metal sheet panel fencing can be installed without rails, as in the case of Stratco’s Good Neighbour fencing. A wide range of colours are available.

  • Brick/Hebel/Cement Fences

Fences made using bricks, Hebel® blocks or concrete are a long-lasting fencing option which is unlikely to need replacing as soon as fences made from other fencing materials such as timber. The appropriate footings must also be built, so building a brick wall may be more time consuming and expensive than other fence types. Brick or cement can be combined with other materials and is often rendered. Hebel blocks are a very light weight alternative to using bricks and is also often rendered.

  • Glass Fences

Glass fence panels are commonly used in areas where fencing is required but privacy is not an issue, such as around a balcony or around a pool. Where some privacy is required, smoked or frosted glass panels can be used. typically glass panels can be installed without a frame; called frameless, or with a steel support top and bottom between the posts; called semi-frameless.

  • PVC Fences

Plastic fences, in the form of pickets or slats generally costs more than timber fencing but it is low maintenance. It can look like a high gloss painted timber fence.

Some fencing contractors will specialise in the type of fences they install, with some just installing fences made from steel sheet panels, or aluminium tubular steel. Glass panel pool fencing is again more specialised, so you may find fencing contractors that just install glass panel fences.
